Outset Infant Mental Health

The epidemic on our doorstep
The overwhelming importance of the first few years of life in determining
the long term emotional and psychological well-being of the individual
is
now well established.
Compelling neuroscientific evidence has led to increasing recognition
of the fact that many of the children and adolescents whose needs
overwhelm statutory services, have difficulties whose origins can
be traced back to the events and relationships of their infancy.
Individuals with insecure attachments are hugely over represented
in the Mental Health Services and the Criminal Justice System. Despite
the staggering social and economic cost of the consequences of a
poor start in life, public resources allocated to Infant Mental Health
are disproportionately small and high quality early years interventions,
although available in a handful of centres, are inaccessible to most.
